Water connects us all. Flooding in one area can affect communities hundreds of miles downstream. Drought conditions can impact food security across different regions. These interconnected challenges call for a global community working together to transform Earth science into action. At the Tethys Geoscience Foundation, we support GEOGLOWS, an initiative that’s improving how we understand and respond to water challenges worldwide.
A Vision Born from Necessity
Back in 2017, something extraordinary happened in the world of water science. The Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Water Community recognized a crucial need: bringing together the world’s scattered freshwater initiatives under one unified effort. They called it GEOGLOWS, and through our foundation’s support and platform, it’s been changing how many understand and manage water resources ever since.
But GEOGLOWS isn’t your typical initiative. By design, it operates through voluntary partnerships, allowing it to work with organizations that traditional structures might miss. Whether it’s collaborating with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) or partnering with specialized agencies like Brazil’s CEMADEN or Centro Nacional de Monitoramento e Alertas de Desastres Naturaisa, GEOGLOWS brings together diverse expertise to solve complex water challenges.
Turning Science into Solutions
At its heart, GEOGLOWS is about making Earth science work for everyone. Through the Tethys Geoscience Foundation, this initiative transforms complex hydrological data into tools that communities can actually use. Imagine a local water manager being able to predict flood risks days in advance, or a city planner accessing detailed water resource information to prepare for future droughts. That’s the kind of real-world impact GEOGLOWS delivers.
The approach is threefold. First, GEOGLOWS focuses on knowledge transfer, building partnerships that share expertise across borders and disciplines. Second, it develops hydrological tools and models that make sense of complex water data. Finally, it creates decision support tools that help communities become more resilient in the face of water-related challenges.

Taking on Global Challenges
Water-related disasters don’t just damage infrastructure – they disrupt lives. Floods force families from their homes. Droughts threaten food security and livelihoods. Storms damage water supply systems that communities depend on. These impacts often hit hardest in places least equipped to handle them, particularly in low-income and marginalized communities.
GEOGLOWS tackles these challenges head-on. By leveraging advanced technology and global collaboration, it helps communities prepare for and respond to water-related disasters. The initiative doesn’t just provide data – it delivers actionable information that helps save lives and protect livelihoods.
Building a More Resilient Future
What makes GEOGLOWS truly special is its commitment to open collaboration. Through the GEO Data Sharing Principles, it ensures that vital water information reaches those who need it most. The initiative works closely with governments to help them achieve international policy mandates, ensuring that Earth observation data translates into effective water management policies.
This approach is already making a difference. Through strategic partnerships with GEO members, participating organizations, and external partners – including non-governmental and commercial sectors – GEOGLOWS is helping build a world where communities are better prepared for water-related challenges.
Join the Movement
As part of the Tethys Geoscience Foundation, GEOGLOWS continues to pioneer scientific and global collaboration in water resource management. Its mission goes beyond simply providing data – it’s about creating a world where every community has access to the water information they need to thrive.
In a world where water-related challenges continue to grow, initiatives like GEOGLOWS show us what’s possible when we work together. By uniting Earth science expertise with practical tools and global cooperation, we’re building a more water-secure future for everyone.
